OK, looked into it some more and ultimately we had problems here because of https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1908791 in fact. The password prompt was taking far longer than usual to appear because pam_fprintd was failing because of that bug. That should be fixed with next Firefox build, so I think it's best to just leave this as it was, because in the usual course of events it works fine and it saves having another needle to maintain.
