Subject: [PATCH 1/3] Fix several covscan warnings
- don't reuse `tmp` variable across the entire function
- don't reuse `it` variable across the entire function
- check whether malloc was successful
- do not copy strings unnecessarily
- remove couple of macros which were confusing covscans and are too
verbose
- add missing return value checks
