This is patch 1/4, which implements the bulk of the changes in type

|
length and bitpos/type offset. I have verified that there are no
|
|||
|
regressions resulting from this patch by running the testsuite on
|
|||
|
Fedora 16 x86_64. Patch and changelog attached.
